Kevin Goering has advised a very wide range of clients in intellectual property, media, sports, publishing and commercial law for 35 years. He also has over three decades of experience as a litigator and trial lawyer handling commercial arbitrations and complex commercial litigation in both State and Federal courts.
After graduating with honors from the University of Kansas and the Cornell Law School, Mr. Goering served as a law clerk to the Honorable Richard J. Cardamone of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. For 20 years until its demise in 2005, Mr. Goering was a partner and head of litigation in the New York City office of the prestigious international firm of Coudert Brothers. He then became a partner in the New York offices of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton and, later, Norwick Schad & Goering.
Mr. Goering is an active member and former leader of a number State and Federal Bar Association committees, the Sports Lawyers Association, the Copyright Society of the USA, and the Media Law Resource Center. He has proudly served on the Board of Directors of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts for the past 17 years.
Mr. Goering has been consistently recognized as a leader in his practice areas by Best Lawyers in America, New York Super Lawyers, and Chambers USA. He is a frequent speaker, moderator and panel member on Intellectual Property Law topics and has advised numerous foreign governments on emerging intellectual property issues in the digital age.
Areas of Practice
Kevin Goering specializes primarily in litigation and counseling for clients in the areas of intellectual property, communications law, First Amendment, and sports law. His intellectual property experience is broad, including matters involving defamation, privacy, copyright, trademark, trade secrets, rights of publicity, advertising, data protection, FTC compliance and licensing issues. In these areas, Mr. Goering’s clients include major publishers, broadcasters and internet service providers as well as content creators such as individual authors, athletes, artists, actors, musicians and their unions.
Mr. Goering also has extensive experience in the prosecution and defense of complex commercial litigation, including class actions and securities fraud cases. He has represented major corporations, banks, creditors, governments, government instrumentalities and international organizations. He has also litigated and handled arbitrations involving sovereign and diplomatic immunity issues. He has handled numerous arbitrations in the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”), the National Association of Securities Dealers (“NASD”) and under the UNCITRAL rules. Many of these arbitrations involved the representation of foreign entities. In recent years he has been involved in significant litigation over contested trusts and estates which often involve allegations of fraud and elder financial abuse. Mr. Goering handles all types of claims for injunctions and damages at the trial court level and he has argued numerous appeals in state and federal courts throughout the country.
